the region around Vinsobres...

you will never run out of things to see & do ...

Vinsobres is a small perched village, just 7 kilometres south of Nyons. It's about an hour north-east of Avignon (with a TGV station), and less than 2 hours to Marseilles. 40 minutes from the nearest TGV station at Montelimar. Paris is only 2 hours 40 minutes by TGV to Avignon, and 2 hours 20 minutes to Montelimar.

This area of Provence is truly a place for all seasons. In March the spring flowers push through; April sees the fruit blossom; May the vines bursting into leaf, greening everywhere, and the first strawberries and cherries turn up in the markets. More fruit and salads in June - and the hillsides are cloaked in lavender. July and August are high season - with village's fetes, music festivals, and more. And there's always a breeze to cool things off. There's a gigantic outdoor Municipal Swim Center with cafe - a great place for cool family fun in Nyons, and another memorable public pool is found beneath the Marquise-de-Sevigny's huge Renaissance castle at Grignan. While you're there, Chateau Grignon is well worth a visit, as well as touring the local shops. Closer still is Franceloc, with its huge water amusement park, just a kilometre down the road on the way to Nyons.

If you want a bit more life - Nyons has a great street cafe culture - and one of Provence's liveliest Market Days occurs every Thursday in Nyons – only 7 kms away! A vast lavender harvest occurs in June/July with countless tiny distilleries perfuming the air. There are sunflower fields and olive, apricot and cherry orchards all around here. Village summer festivities feature fireworks, music, dining and dancing. September brings the grape harvests (though you could probably go wine tasting everyday for a year and still not have exhausted the caves and the local wines.) The autumn colors are amazing in October and November, and by Christmas the olives are ready to harvest. Christmas brings its own traditions and superb food delicacies. Vinsobres is a hillside Cotes-du-Rhone wine village with its own cafe, Epicerie & supermarche, Post Office, restaurant and a Boulengerie/small grocery creating morning-fresh croissants/baguettes, and flutes! It has twisting narrow streets, traditional laundry 'lavoirs' and two lovely churches. And, every Monday morning all year round, a tiny local Farmers Market holds forth right in VInsobres, behind the Marie. There you can purchase olive oil, honey, cheese, veggies all without leaving the village. There is also tennis in the village, just book the court from the tourist bureau next to the Marie. Nyons has a cinema, many cafes and restaurants, an outdoor theater, tennis, supermarkets, banking & services... plus one of Provence's best Market Days. Wine tasting is everywhere! Bike around the valley vineyards. Hike or horseback ride, following high altitude paths of the WW2 French Resistance. There are music, opera & dance spectaculars in Vaison-la-Romaine, Orange, Arles and (a day trip) Nimes. Avignon's Festival, only an hour away, is home to a huge number of theatrical productions.
